Dining Out Paleo: The Green Corner Cafe

Welcome to my Thursday series: Dining Out Paleo

Every Thursday I post a recent dining out experience and how I chose the best possible options to stay true to my Paleo lifestyle and avoid grains, sugars, dairy, and soy to the best of my ability.  Unless informed otherwise, I always assume that the restaurant uses vegetable/canola oils for cooking.

I live over an hour from most of my closest friends, so I like to make special lunch appointments with them from time to time to ensure that we all stay abreast of each others' personal lives and the trials and tribulations since we last lunched.  Each luncheon involves much pre-planning with an in-depth Yelp search in conjunction with mapping out a "fair drive" for all parties involved.  This week's ladies lunch brought me to a fantastic little cafe in Glendale, California - The Green Corner Cafe.

The Green Corner Cafe's whole philosophy around food and health really caught my attention first.  Their effort to use organic food and meats that are antibiotic and hormone-free was a glowing star that drew me in and sealed my lunch date deal.

My gal pal, K, and I met around 11:30.  The restaurant, aptly named, is tucked into a small little corner behind a donut shop and is easy to miss if you don't know where you are going.  I was able to park after my second lap around the block and much yelling from my obviously annoyed in-car navigation system.

I started with a bottle of mineral water and K ordered a glass of fresh squeezed carrot and apple juice.  Her juice looked (and smelled) delicious and I will certainly be ordering the same on my next visit.

I loved the array of salad selections... so many of them sounded incredible.  I finally decided on the Grilled Eggplant Salad: eggplant, bell pepper, tomato, jalapeno, turmeric, cumin, garlic, and cilantro.  And I requested the addition of grilled chicken.

When I ordered, I was informed that the dish will take ~20 minutes since everything must be prepared and grilled fresh.  Umm... of COURSE that's okay!  My sweet, patient, and very pregnant friend, K, was starving and we informed the waitress that her meal was most important and to please get that out ASAP.

My meal arrived soon after K's and both were gorgeous displays of hard kitchen effort.

I wasn't sure what type of taste to expect, but what zinged across my tongue was FANTASTIC.  Light, fresh, and citrusy.  The turmeric and cumin added a depth of flavor that was truly unique.  I was immediately in love!

K and I noshed and chatted.  Then noshed some more until we realized just how full we were.  Two take-out boxes, a very reasonable bill, and an unfulfilled desire for a Nutella crêpe later... and we were once again on our way to our respective corners of Southern California.

I will absolutely be coming back here to try many more menu items.  That is, if I can tear myself away from the amazing grilled eggplant salad!
